Finally, Twitter and Facebook fan pages are indexed in Google search results. Here are some SEO tips and suggestions to get better rankings of your Twitter and Facebook pages.
Choose An Appropriate Name and Username
Your name should include at least one of your most precise keywords. For example, if you perform massage therapy or reflexology, your name should include one of those.
Add a keyword or two to your display name as well. Note that this can make your site less personal, however if SEO is of utmost importance, do not leave these out. For example, ours is "Boston Web Guru" without extra keywords (however keywords are included in our actual name).
Do Not Shorten
When including your URL in your profile on both Facebook and Twitter, be sure to use your actual URL (ie. mysite.com). Consider removing the “www” as Google only indexes your first 20 characters. Bit.ly and other URL shortening services are great for actual posts, however, they’re not good for your profile URL.
Pump Up Your Profile
Your profile is a great place to put your keywords, but don’t go overboard. You want to personalize your profile as much as you can, however, remember you only have 160 characters. Keywords will help with search on Twitter makes it easier for people to search and find you.
SEO Your Picture
You can SEO your profile picture! Rename the photo before you upload so that when it shows up in the URL it will have the keywords attached to it. Be sure to leave NO spaces.
Use Hashtags and Keywords
Use your top keywords in your tweets and status messages. These will help Google rank you, and only boost your overall ranking. Use hashtags (#) on your tweets, since Google is now ranking hashtags.
For example, we use #BostonWebGuru for our tweets. When searching, all #BostonWebGuru tweets will show up.
Promote Your Page
Be sure to submit your Twitter page and Facebook page to RSS feeds and directories and ping it.
You should be doing this already to get your Twitter and Facebook page out there, but make sure to add your Twitter user name in all posts.
All of these tips are helpful and done correctly will boost your Google search rankings, but be sure to not go too far. There is a very fine line between "getting the word out there" and spamming. Beware; obvious extra SEO efforts can be annoying to actual people, and can have discouraging effects on potential visitors.
